WoI Symposium in Vienna on Thursday, 1 July 2010, from 7.00pm

ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is very pleased to announce the very first World of Ideas Symposium that takes place on Thursday, 1 July 2010 at 7.00pm in Garage X on Vienna’s Petersplatz. The event is conceived and organised by the Creative Industries Office of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA and features renowned producers and thinkers of the creative world, such as Harald Gründl, Katarina Posch, Sebastian Olma and Gerald Nestler.

An increasing number of enterprises in the creative industries are engaged around the world and network with creative minds across the globe. One’s self-conception is frequently put to the test in many ways on other continents: creativity and ingenuity are defined and evaluated differently depending on the cultural and political context.

The World of Ideas Symposium turns the spotlight on the concept of “idea” in a global context. Six protagonists of the creative industries – from Vienna, Amsterdam, New York, Beijing and Harare – will discuss the value and significance of ideas in relation to their personal world. They will challenge common preconceptions about the topic and offer approaches to support creative minds in their own international endeavours.

Participating in the discussion will be designer and design anthropologist Harald Gründl from Vienna, Austria, social entrepreneur Hiu Ng from Beijing, China, cultural activist and creative director Paul Brickhill from Harare, Simbabwe, sociologist and consultant Sebastian Olma from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Professor for the History, Theory and Criticism of Design Katarina Posch from New York, USA and artist Gerald Nestler from Vienna, Austria. The discussion is lead by Gerald Straub, applied cultural theorist from Vienna.

The participants will deliver introductory statements on the concept of “idea” before exploring the topic in more detail with the panel, which will also include contributions from the audience. The symposium also serves to screen the World of Ideas film series for the very first time as well as present the book entitled A Way Beyond Creative Industries (Ed.: Robert Punkenhofer, Folio Publishers, Vienna).

The symposium is sponsored by go international – an initiative by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs –, the arge creativ wirtschaft austria/evolve and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture.
