TOM LANOYE / AUTHOR / ANTWERP

How can politics encourage creativity and innovation?
Through policies that dare to make long-term commitment and investments in diverse projects. Afterwards, political courage to defend the final outcome is needed, which also includes projects that failed.

What do you like best about Antwerp?
That all in all, it is small and well-arranged, with the ambitions of a metropolis and the reality of a provincial town. People can have dreams aplenty, but the dimensions and budgets commit to a bigger creativity.

What should the world know about your work?
My theatre plays, both the original (Fort Europa) and the adaptions (Shakespeare, Klaus Mann, Euripides – Schlachten, Mephisto Forever, Atropa…). And my novels, which have unfortunately been translated less than the plays.
